Slip Hazards - Managing risk and reefer containers

Slip hazards
occur when you, or someone else loses traction with the ground.
This is often caused by the following:
- Inappropriate footwear (lack of thread on work boots)
- Walking on slippery surfaces (wet, greasy or icy)
- Smooth or highly polished grounds
You may find slip hazards when working inside a 'reefer', otherwise known as chilled or frozen containers. These containers are often kept at a low temperature, to ensure the product inside doesn't perish.
Ways to mitigate risk:
- Avoid excess movement
- Make sure your work boots have adequate thread on the outer sole
- Keep both hands free to help with balance
- Take small steps, keeping your centre of gravity underneath you
- Do not rush or cut corners
- Use handrails wherever possible, or if there are none us the sides of the container as support
- Monitor your fatigue
